Natural Diamonds vs Lab-Created Diamonds

Recently, lab-created diamonds have grown significantly in popularity, but they’re still met with some skepticism in the current marketplace. First, you have to decide if you or your partner would be comfortable with such goods as they don’t have the same long standing history as natural diamonds. Second, you have to take into account the value of such jewelry pieces – as lab-created diamonds don’t hold their value as their natural counterparts.

What is a Lab-Created Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is one that as its name states – made in a lab and in a very specific controlled environment to mimic the growth of a natural earth-mined diamond. Visually, they will look and have the same chemical composition as a natural earth-mined diamond. There are two processes that a lab-created diamond is created with: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

Pros of buying a Lab-Created Diamond?

First and foremost, for someone who is on a budget, a lab created diamonds are a lot less damaging to your wallet. Most lab-grown diamonds will cost 30-40% less than a natural diamond of similar size. Some may also consider lab-grown diamonds to be more environmentally friendly, however, there are current conversations around the amount of energy used 24/7 to keep up with the current demands of lab-created diamonds.

Cons of buying a Lab-Created Diamond?

Natural diamonds for centuries are considered to be one-of-a-kind with a long standing history and tradition, compared to a mass produced lab-grown diamond that doesn’t carry the same story. Natural diamond values have also steadily increased over time, whereas a lab-grown diamond’s value will decrease over a period of time. In many instances – some people choose to upgrade their ring or diamonds, and you’re unable to get similar value and interest with a lab-grown diamond.
