Diamond Cut Grade, Explained: The One “C” That Makes or Breaks a Stone


Carat and clarity get all the attention. But the grade that actually decides whether a diamond looks alive or looks dead is cut. Here’s how it’s judged — and what to check before you spend real money.

But after decades of buying stones across the counter, we’ll tell you plainly: the grade that decides whether a diamond has life in it is cut. A one-carat stone with flawless clarity can sit flat and gray under the lights if it’s cut badly. A well-cut stone one color grade lower will out-sparkle it every time.

Cut is also the least understood of the four Cs, partly because people confuse it with shape. Below you will find helpful information on what “cut” means  and then then walk through how the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) actually arrives at a cut grade for a round brilliant.

GIA’s system doesn’t average these factors. It’s deductive: the final grade is capped by the weakest link. If six of seven measured factors land in Excellent territory and one falls to Good, the stone grades Good. Not Very Good, not “almost Excellent.” Good.

This is the counterintuitive bit, and it’s the reason you can’t grade a stone off a spec sheet alone. The proportions don’t act independently. Table size, crown angle, and pavilion angle play off one another. When two or three of them sit near their grade boundary at the same time, the combination can drag the whole grade down, even though every single number, read on its own, looked fine.

Craftsmanship can do the same. GIA calls out two finishing faults by name: painting, where the upper facets are over-tilted, and digging out, where the lower (pavilion) facets are over-tilted.
