4 Tips When You Sell A Diamond Engagement Ring

Whether you are looking to upgrade, change, or just sell your diamond engagement ring, DNR’s in-house gemologists are willing to help. First, you have to be realistic with the pricing of selling a diamond. If you have an appraisal, you will sell your jewelry for a lower price than what it’s appraised at. Appraisals determine the replacement value of the diamond or jewelry, whereas, selling prices will probably never match the appraisal.

With that in mind, we’ve identified 4 tips to help you when you sell your diamond ring:

1. Make sure someone sees your diamond in person

Many companies will try to give you a high number over the phone to entice you to bring in the office only to tell you a lower number in person. DNR would prefer you stop by for a free assessment so we can give you the highest offer possible. It’s hard to tell the weight, color, and clarity of a diamond with just a photo or verbal description. You should bring your stone in so a trained gemologist can take a look at it in person.

2. Find a local dealer

Because someone should evaluate your stone in person, the best option is to find a diamond dealer locally. We have had clients send in their stones, of which we have stringent protocols in place to make sure that our clients feel comfortable in sending in jewelry. We also cover the shipment costs. However, we can’t speak for everyone. Another benefit of bringing in your jewelry in person is you can get paid on the spot via cash, check or wire.

3. Make sure to bring any paperwork attached to your jewelry

Make sure you try to find any original paperwork that may have come with the ring to help expedite the selling process. If a diamond is certified, they typically will be certified by one of the following companies:

● GIA – Gemological Institute Of America
● EGL – European Gemological Laboratories
● AGS – American Gem Society
● IGI – International Gemological Institute

Each certification will have an identification number that will help us determine the exact details of your diamond. With paperwork such as a GIA report, we can provide you with a ballpark idea of your jewelry’s worth over the phone. Without paperwork, we would need to see the diamond in person to be able to assess it’s value.

4. Determine what you want to sell

We’ve had clients only want to sell the diamond and keep the mounting to replace with another stone for sentimental reasons. In such cases, we are able to easily remove the diamond from the mounting for you. However, most clients are willing to depart with their entire ring and some have matching wedding bands they sell along with the main diamond. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure it’s right for you.

Bottom line
